Political Career of Amitabh Bachchan

In 1984, after taking a break from the film industry for some time, he entered the field of politics in support of his friend Rajiv Gandhi. He immediately defeated Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from Allahabad seat by a huge margin of votes. However, in 1987 he left politics. The biggest reason for this was that the name of his elder brother Ajitabh started being taken in the Bofors scam. However, he was found not guilty in this case.

After this, when his old friend Amar Singh started going through a period of economic crisis, he started supporting the Samajwadi Party by supporting him. After this his wife Jaya Bachchan joined the Samajwadi Party and became a Rajya Sabha member. Jaya Bachchan is still a Rajya Sabha member from the Samajwadi Party.

Return to Film Industry

After leaving politics, Amitabh Bachchan played the lead character in the 1988 film Shahenshah which proved to be a box office hit.
